About the Department

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), stands at the forefront of integrating engineering principles with medical and biological sciences to advance healthcare solutions. Established in the 2024/2025 academic session under the School of Electrical and Systems Engineering, the department evolved from the former Department of Biomedical Technology, which was part of the School of Health and Health Technology (later changed to School of Basic Medical Sciences) since 2015.

Our mission is to produce technologically oriented graduates equipped with a broad-based knowledge in various aspects of Biomedical Engineering, emphasizing biology, engineering, and medicine. We are committed to training graduates who can be readily absorbed into several areas of the rapidly developing fields of Biomedical Engineering, both locally and internationally.

Our curriculum is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education that includes basic and applied courses, experimentation, industrial training and student project. This rigorous academic framework ensures that our graduates are well-prepared to meet the growing needs of Biomedical Engineers in the public, private, and industrial sectors.

Our faculty comprises experienced professionals dedicated to mentoring students and advancing research in areas such as biomaterials, biomedical instrumentation, intelligent biomedical systems control engineering, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, neurosciences, biotechnology, and rehabilitation engineering. We emphasize aspects of study that are relevant to national and international development objectives, enhancing the relevance of our institution to society.

At the Department of Biomedical Engineering, FUTA, we are committed to producing world-class engineers capable of transforming healthcare delivery in Nigeria and contributing to global advancements in biomedical science and engineering. As a department, our vision and mission align with the core values of the Federal University of Technology Akure encapsulated in the acronym "ICARE," reflecting our commitment to Integrity, Creativity, Accountability, Reliability, and Excellence.

We invite prospective students, researchers, and industry partners to explore our programmes and join us in our mission to advance healthcare through innovative engineering solutions. Together, we can make a significant impact on the future of medical technology and improve the quality of life for communities worldwide.
